James Murray Solicitors is a large high street law firm with offices in Liverpool and Bootle. The firm has a strong tradition in providing excellent legal provision and service to clients.
The firm is committed to expanding the Housing Department, to provide these important services to as many tenants as possible.
We assist tenants who face housing crises such as Unlawful Eviction, Repossession, Homelessness and Housing Disrepair that poses a risk to health.
The Firm has Legal Aid contracts in the Liverpool and Sefton area. We also hold the Housing Loss Prevention Advice Services (HLPAS) contracts for Liverpool and for Birkenhead including the Housing In-Court Duty Scheme.
This role will be fast-paced and challenging. There will be lots of direct contact with tenants who may be distressed, vulnerable and require urgent assistance. However, the role is rewarding and you will make a positive difference. The Housing Team are passionate about helping to improve housing conditions and challenging unjust practices.

Undertake advocacy at Court Work closely with Counsel
Become familiar with funding Receive in-house & external training
Employees in this role often advance to recognised periods of training/training contracts and work would satisfy the SRA QWE arrangements.
The successful applicant should have the ability to organise, monitor and evaluate their own workload in order to meet targets and deadlines. Strength of character is needed to deal with distressed and/or vulnerable clients. Good interpersonal skills are essential. Some administration work to be undertaken as part of the role. Compressed hours or part-time hours will be considered.
Experience in relevant area would be preferred but is not essential, as training will be given. CILEx or Law degree/LPC/SQE desirable.

We’re looking for a confident and self-motivated Supervising Solicitor with proven experience of supervising and coaching junior lawyers. You will be responsible for supervising and conducting housing management and leasehold cases and leading and mentoring a team of junior lawyers to support all functions of the Legal Services Team.

The role
The key responsibilities for the role are:
- To lead an efficient and high performing team of junior lawyers to support all functions of the Legal Services Team
- To supervise, mentor, coach and develop junior colleagues to deliver a cohesive, high performing department, providing a consistent service of the highest standards to protect the interests of MTVH whilst supporting successful completion of training and qualifications
- To manage a varied caseload covering housing management and leasehold disputes and work cross-functionally to protect the interests of MTVH
- To monitor and ensure compliance with KPI’s and SLA standards and make recommendations on best practice to the Head of Legal Services
- To prepare and deliver effective training as required on a variety of housing management, leasehold and property law issues to colleagues
What you’ll need to succeed
- Admission as a Solicitor in England & Wales.
- Substantial post qualification experience (a minimum of 5 years PQE) in housing law acting on behalf of social landlords and tenants gained in private practice, local authority or in-house RP legal team.
- Detailed knowledge of housing and leasehold legislation, case law, litigation practice and procedure and managing complex legal cases.
- Experience in managing and coaching a high performing team and the ability to create a learning culture where knowledge and best practice is shared.
- Proven experience in building and sustaining working relationships with key stakeholders and partners both internal and external and act as a “go to” person
