Power to the people!

NL doesn’t have a vote in the New York gubernatorial election but, if we did, we’d probably cast it for the “Rent is Too Damn High” party. The performance of Jimmy McMillan in the recent gubernatorial debates has become something of a Youtube hit (available here; see also here for a more considered interview). I’m not sure that there are many people who’d disagree with his sentiments, although his facial hair might not be something that you’d wish to develop yourself. Especially if you’re a woman.

Alternatively, the Independent reports on a rather novel form of rent protest in Berlin. Protesters make appointments to see a flat and then, once they get inside, strip to reveal slogans such as “too expensive” written on their bodies, turn up the music and dance. Footage is then posted on Youtube (although I can’t find any at the moment, and I’ve spent quite some time looking!).

What say you blog readers? Anyone up for similar movements in the UK?

J is a barrister. He considers housing law to be the single greatest kind of law known to humankind and finds it very odd that so few people share this view.

I’m not aware of any similar movements but I disagree wholeheartedly on your assessment of Mr McMillan’s facial hair… It is, quite frankly, something which should be admired and persevered for future generations somehow… I’m not aware of any UK politicians putting in such a level of effort in terms of beard/moustache? Oh how things might have turned out differently if they’d only spent more time on their whiskers…

Oh Nearly Legal – you are giving me ideas… Just not the beard, obviously (although…)

So, we can blame any sudden outbreak of naked people with beards inspecting rental properties in the UK on J. That is helpful.

Perhaps not quite the sort of fame I had hoped to achieve in my career, but, in these dark days, I’ll take what I can get. Perhaps people should view rip-off flats with “we’re all in this together” written on their bodies?
