Nearly Legal: Housing Law News and Comment

Medley

Here are various bits and pieces, while we await big cases such as the Supreme Court decision in Poshteh v RB Kensington & Chelsea. (You can watch the hearing here.)

We don’t usually promote events on Nearly Legal, but I am happy to make an exception for this one. Cornerstone Barristers are hosting the inaugural Bryan McGuire QC memorial lecture on homelessness on 5 April 2017. The speaker is His Honour Judge Luba QC.

Bryan McGuire QC was one of the giants of housing law and a warm and generous man. A memorial lecture series is a very fitting way to remember him.

Entrance is free and details and registration are here.

Meanwhile, Airbnb appear to be having some trouble in the US, where a major apartment owner in Denver, Aimco, has brought a claim against Airbnb on the basis that it assists “Aimco tenants to breach their leases in order to sublet their apartments.” I am somewhat at a loss as to the basis for such a claim. I can only presume that they do things differently there. But interesting to watch for nonetheless.

On blog news, email updates should now look a bit better and images should sit in the right place in the text, rather than being stuck at the top no matter what. Unfortunately, we are still stuck with anything in square brackets, including the year for case references, being stripped out by the email software, but hope to have that sorted out before too long.  For the moment, email readers will just have to put up with inaccurate case references…

I’ve decided to change how we deal with job ads. These will now be once a week, (if there are any), in a specific post. That will go up on a Sunday, whenever possible. This should stop the job ads filling up the numbers of blog posts and email updates as they were.

Lastly, when facing likely possession proceedings for your assured shorthold tenancy, do not marry your house. It won’t work and the divorce will be messy…
