The London Legal Support Trust annual sponsored walk takes place on 18 May 2009, at 5.30pm. Members of the judiciary, as well as solicitors, barristers and ILEX members engage in a leisurely stroll around London in order to raise money for legal charities and other important organisations, such as law centres.
This year, the event is a 10K walk, led by the Lord Chief Justice. Our friends (hi Viv!) at Lambeth Law Centre are taking part and are asking for sponsorship.
Lambeth Law Centre provides case work and representation in housing, immigration, welfare rights and debt work. They help prevent a lot of evictions and refusals of housing on the basis of homelessness and are part of Lambeth County Court Duty Solicitor scheme.
They are part of Capitalise, a London wide debt project funded by the Financial Inclusion Fund and run outreach sessions at Connexions to assist young people facing homelessness and Clapham Community Project for those with debt problems. In addition, they run the London Discrimination Unit, a London wide employment project specialising in cases involving discrimination.
In common with all Law Centres and other social welfare specialist legal advice agencies across London they have been severely affected by the new LSC contracts and are finding it very hard to survive as both cash flow and income have been undermined. Despite this, they remain committed to providing a high quality service for the most disadvantaged people in Lambeth.
They are seeking to raise £5,000 to assist with employing a new paralegal or trainee solicitor. The team here at NL are always keen to see new people join the field of social welfare law and have nothing but love for Law Centres and the valuable work they do.
