Hopkin Murray Beskine
Vacancy – Paralegal/Trainee Solicitor
Hopkin Murray Beskine have a vacancy for a paralegal to assist in our busy family and/or housing and public law team, commencing in January 2019.
We are a long established North London firm with clients from across London and beyond, who come to us because of our expertise in family, housing and public law. We have a thriving legal aid practice together with an increasing volume of privately funded cases. We are recommended by the Chambers UK Guide and Legal 500.
We are looking for candidates with an interest in family law work and/or public law and housing work. We provide a collaborative workplace where you will be well supported and supervised by experienced lawyers and have the opportunity to work on a variety of different cases. We invest time in our paralegals, because we hope that those who want to become solicitors will go on to training contracts with us, and those who want to go to the bar or pursue other legal careers will take away valuable relevant skills and experience. In recent years, all of our paralegals who wished to become trainee solicitors have been offered training contracts.
The work carried out by the family law team includes care proceedings, privately funded financial remedy proceedings, contact and residence disputes, and international child abduction in the High Court. Paralegals in the family team work in both our public and private law teams and on legally aided and privately funded cases. They play a key role in our busy domestic violence injunction service including regular sessions at a local domestic violence centre.
Paralegals in our housing and public law team support solicitors in a range of interesting work, including judicial review, housing possession and disrepair claims in the County Court, illegal eviction, and homelessness challenges and appeals. Paralegals have a varied role, from helping with the County Court duty possession scheme to preparing cases for the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court. The team regularly undertakes high-profile strategic litigation.
You will be expected to work hard, be flexible, produce excellent written work and establish relationships with a range of clients, from privately paying clients to vulnerable homeless people. We expect applicants to have a law degree or to have completed the CPE/GDL. Previous relevant experience is desirable but not essential.
The appointments will be for a fixed term of one year, starting in January 2019. For candidates who have completed the Legal Practice Course, this will be with a view to a training contract commencing after a year if performance meets expectations.
Closing date: 10am on Monday 3rdDecember 2018
Please note that we will be holding interviews for shortlisted applicants on Wednesday 12thDecember 2018.
