Planning Voice Caseworker

NJC scale SP 31-42 £31,140- £40,785 pro rata

Hours: 21 per week 1 year fixed term contract

In order to respond to local needs in an environment of massive redevelopment Southwark Law Centre set up the  Planning Voice project in August 2017 with initial funding from United St Saviours Charity. The funding has now been extended for a second year. Our current caseworker is leaving so we are seeking to recruit a replacement

The overall aim of our project is to support and empower local people particularly from economically and socially disadvantaged communities living in North Southwark to be able to influence developments affecting the environment they live in. We work closely with community activists and local organisations to add capacity to existing initiatives. We have set up a ‘panel’ of pro bono experts that we call upon to assist with cases such as potential Judicial Reviews. The project is guided by an advisory group comprising of people with expertise on planning issues and/or local knowledge.

The caseworker provides group training sessions on planning issues and one to one support for local residents, including advocacy, advice and drafting representations.

We are looking for someone with:

  • A strong legal research background
  • An understanding of some of the key impacts of major development on local communities
  • The ability to engage with more disadvantaged members of the community
