Community Care/Housing Solicitor – Consultant

About Youth Legal and Resource Centre

Youth Legal is a specialist legal advice service for young people in Wandsworth providing independent legal advice that is youth centered and suited to young people’s needs – including housing and obtaining social services support.  We work with young people from every community, care leavers, young carers, disabled young people, asylum seekers and migrant children and their families.  Youth Legal currently holds a Legal Aid Agency contract in Community Care, and has tendered for a Housing Contract.

Youth Legal went from strength to strength in 2016 and is now looking to establish further growth in 2018.  A position has opened for a Housing and Community Care Consultant beginning January 2018.


The consultant will be required to act as a Community Care/Housing Solicitor for Youth Legal and Resource Centre advising and representing young people aged 13-25 and families with children. The consultant will undertake Legal Casework for individual clients under our Legal Aid Contract including:

  • Keep accurate records of the time he or she spends on the work undertaken
  • To act in accordance with Legal Aid Agency quality assurance standards and Youth Legal’s own procedures
  • To encourage good team work and strong lines of communication with Youth Legal stakeholders and supervising solicitor
  • To act as a legal resource to staff, volunteers and to workers in other agencies
  • To provide legal advice and assistance on a wide range of community care, housing and homelessness problems
  • To provide telephone advice and 2nd tier advice
  • To undertake High Court/County Court litigation and advocacy
  • To keep up-to-date with changes in community care, housing and associated legislation
  • Be self administering


  • At least 2-3 year experience within community care and housing law
  • Have up to date knowledge of community care and housing law including litigation
  • If not already a supervisor, the candidate would have to qualify as a housing supervisor by July 2018
  • Have up to date experience in running cases under a Legal Aid contract including CCMS applications
  • Ideally, have experience of working with young people aged between 16-25 with disabilities, those who are in care or are care leavers, (young) carers and families who are destitute with no recourse to public funds
