We’re looking for an experienced Managing Solicitor who will successfully lead our London team in providing a viable, high quality legal service to homeless people and other people in housing need.
Shelter Legal Services team has an enviable national reputation for excellence in the provision of housing law. As well as providing casework services for individual clients and internal consultancy, we support the organisational priorities of policy and campaigning on housing law and access to justice issues. Your key responsibilities:
- Managing, supervising, supporting and developing a team of solicitors, advisers and support staff
- Providing a specialist legal casework service in housing law, including litigation and consultancy
- Making sure we deliver high quality legal work and maximise income generation
- Liaising with colleagues across Shelter to guarantee the effective delivery of our services.And what you’ll need:
- Substantial experience of handling a wide range of housing cases, both public and private sector
- In-depth knowledge of issues like homelessness, security of tenure and possessions proceedings
- Legal Aid supervisor status in housing
- The ability to manage teams to achieve targets, as well as good communication and problem solving skills.

have a vacancy in the expanding housing law department of our firm based at Royal Arsenal Riverside, Woolwich, adjacent to the Crossrail station due to open shortly.
The role will involve handling the whole range of core housing work of possession claims, disrepair, homelessness and allocations and sections 17 and 20 Children Act 1989 matters. Our clients come from a very wide variety of backgrounds.
We have a legal aid housing law contract and Lexcel accreditation. You will need to be used to dealing with the LAA and of course CCMS!!
Knowledge and experience of conditional fee agreements would be an advantage as would the ability to be self-servicing to an extent. A willingness to conduct advocacy and experience of having done so would also be advantageous.
We have good supporting technology including voice recognition software and an excellent and simple to use time recording system.
We have many, many external referrals and potential clients and it is heart breaking to have to turn away disadvantaged individuals for much needed legal services. We also have internal referrals from our family law and clinical negligence casework teams.
Salary is competitive.
Experience of being able to work effectively as part of a team is essential.
