A makeover…

25/11/2012

After much swearing, faffing and fiddling with the placement of semi colons in the underlying code of the site, the new look blog is here.

It is hopefully cleaner and easier to read, while keeping all of the functions of the old site. It should also make it easier for me to adapt and add to in the future. Many of the bits that were in the sidebars are now in the footer at the bottom of each page, so if you are missing something, look there.

Of course, if you really hate the new version, you are welcome to let me know. I won’t necessarily do anything about it, though there are bound to be tinkerings and more minor changes in the next week or two.

(The problem with the list of Bailii’s recent decisions is not my fault, by the way. Bailii has  got a problem with its feed.)

[Update 26 Nov. So that is the links page fixed, RSS feeds and email updates fixed and the comment forms adjusted. Also sidebar added to single post pages…  Anything else going wrong?]

Giles Peaker is a solicitor and partner in the Housing and Public Law team at Anthony Gold Solicitors in South London. You can find him on Linkedin and on Twitter. Known as NL round these parts.

Yes, I hate the new version. Sorry.

Ah, hate, love, such strong emotions, two sides of the same coin. Perhaps with time, patience and an open heart, hate might turn to love?

No? Never mind. Anything in particular getting your dander up?

Really sorry but the old version was much better and feel that this make-over fails to reflect your expertise in all that is legal. I like the font and the spacing though :)

Thanks Sian, but how so? Everything is still here, just in different places on the page.

I like it! Did you always have posts listed by category and I just never noticed? It’s a brilliant idea because, working for a district council that sold off its housing stock, there are some elements of the housing law sphere that we would never need to consider.

They were always listed by category. Just to the right of the main text before… Hence the point of a tidy up.

I need time to get used to it, I think. I was comfortable with the old site, even if it was a bit cluttered – maybe that gave it an old book shop feel with lots jammed in, but with a feeling that there was a plan to it somewhere.

More specifically though, the ‘most recent comments’ bit used to say when comments had been made. When I wondered if I’d missed anything, my eye did glance over that date to see what was recent and what was not and this has gone.

Umm, the ‘recent comments’ never did have the dates. I’ve just double checked with the old version of the site.

It is very interesting what a change brings out – things people thought were there but weren’t, things that were there but people had not noticed…

I like the old bookshop analogy. But given the hefty archives, things needed to be a bit more straightforward up front. It is all still there, just moved about a bit…

I for one love the new site – nice clean design, uncluttered and the same spot on opinions and legal insight into the murky world of housing law.
I can confirm that I will not be joining the Facebook campaign to reinstate the old NL site!

I have no problems with the appearance of the website. The use of semi-colons is a wonder to behold. But I do have a query regarding the RSS feed. Today’s Ali v Birmingham post comes through truncated and asks me tohyperlink to the website for the full post. This is not good.
The wonderful railway services provided by Third Rate Westerm allow a great deal of time for reading NL’s musings vis the BlackBerry. If the posts can only be read via the website this is not possible. Us poor Housing staffers don’t have the smartestof phones to do this, and once at the office we do have work to do.
